there's a good reason why that miwa suspected that osamu was involved with a neighbor. if he didn't admit of killing that bamster and just deny of any involvement on that one, he might not get connected to the trigger connection that was found in the forbidden zone. yes, maybe he did that to cover yuma, and yes he might still be suspected even if he denied killing the bamster, but if he only he acted dumb about that situation and showed that he didn't know any of it, i don't think that miwa will volunteer to monitor him immediately just like that. his answer solidified miwa's suspicion more. by saying that he was the one who killed the bamster, he actually drew more attention to him and he implicated yuma more instead of helping him cover

mikumo was narrow-sighted (again..) on that scene as he didn't realize the implication of what he said. he forgot that both of them (mikumo and kuga) made an exit/escape after that bamster died and also those classmates of his were subjected to hypnosis to forget any neighbor related attacks on the forbidden zone (as a punishment for trespassing). so if he really did deny that or just said mikumo would probably be off from suspicion.
